testing!

This is a test.  Since even I sometimes have trouble reading my own font, maybe it’s time to take a poll.  (NOTE: please re-load or check the blog page, since an earlier version was published too soon!)

The issue: my small font is hard to read on the dark background. I usually have to enlarge the font so I can read it easily.  While I have no other font options, I can change color and use bold face (though bold doesn’t look much different, see below). Darker colors are hard to read on the dark background, and lighter colors are hard to read in the feed or reader.  Also, the colors and format can look different on different computers.

So, please tell me if some are easier to read than others. Also tell me if there is a best or worst. (Regular font is first, bold is second; see not much difference except in the reader). I may not be able to satisfy everyone, but I can see what might work best for most. Thanks!

  1. In my reader, I like the black bold one (#19) the best. On the site, I like the blue one (#18) the best. #2, #3, #14, #15 are hard to read on the site.

  2. I like 4 and 5. Although some of them are easier to read than those two. For instance, 12 and 13 are very easy to read, but I don’t like yellow. 18 and 19 are easy to read as well. So are 20 and 21. And the latter 4 don’t look so bad either…

    10, 11, 6, 7, are definite No’s.

  3. In my reader the white text on your blog comes in as black, which is easy to read. The colors in the reader are harder to see. For the blog page, I prefer 15 and 21 for the contrast against the black page. The bold does make it easier to read and when it is all bold it doesn’t looked bolded, it just looks normal. Numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 are particularly hard to read. (Though maybe I need glasses…)

  4. I only use the website, and I don’t like the darker colors. I actually prefer #1, but any of the other lighter colors (#2, 4, 12, 14, 16, 20) are fine. I think the bold is really hard to see on the website–it’s kind of blurry.

It is a testament to your superior writing skills that I always lean in close to read your blog, even when the text is dark and hard to see. 🙂

  5. I thought 18/19 were the easiest to read.

  6. 18 and 19 are easiest–I like the pink though too!

  7. I use google reader, so they all show up. On your site, anything after number 5, excepting 8-11 (not enough contrast). In all the options, the bold is easier to read.

  8. Heh. Just like you said, the ones that look good in Google Reader (darker ones) are harder to read on your blog, whilst the opposite is true for the lighter colors.

The colors that work best for each? 1 (the original) and 18. The bold makes 19 pop a little *too* much, but my eyes are sensitive that way. Astigmatism. :-/

  9. I have a lot of trouble reading any typeface of any color on a dark background. (I know that doesn’t help at all) I guess 12 , 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 are the easiest for me to read, in the sense of being most legible.

  10. In Google Reader, 2 is the hardest to read. I wouldn’t want to read 12, 14, or 16 for a long time either.

On your blog, 10 and 11 are hardest to read. Most of the others are no problem.

Bold is better than regular in most cases. What would you think about making the font size a notch bigger as an alternative to bold?

    I like #1 the best!

  11. Hmmm…got you thinking with my previous comment, didn’t I? starting to feel a little responsible here!

Anyway, since you asked, 1, and 12-21 are readable. 2-11 not so much.

  12. #2, #18, #20 are easiest for me to read on the web.

Contrary to a previous post, I think the BOLD version is more difficult to read than its non-bold companion because the bold actually eats up what is known as “white space” or in the case of your blog, “black space” around the letters which allows your eyes to glide through the text.

    HTH

  13. I can see them all . . . but 16 through 19 are easiest to read.

  14. I usually read you in Google Reader and the color fonts show up strangely in it. This font, however, shows up black and it is so much easier to read in Google Reader. Of course, I could be a littls less lazy and open up a window. 🙂

  15. #17 if I read your site but #1 if I’m reading your posts in my reader.

  16. I think that 12 through to 21 are easiest to read on your blog – they’re brighter, so show up better against the dark background.

    In the reader, I like 3, 5, 7, 11 and 19 the best.

  17. I think #21 seems to be the one that works best (for me) both on the site and in Google Reader.

#1 is the hardest on the site, and #12 & #16 are the most difficult in Reader.

  18. This is like homework. I say 16 and 17 are easiest to read, but I’m blind as a bat.

  19. 16 and 17 from your site. I don’t recall having any issues with my reader.

  20. 14 is rough on the reader, and 10 is tough on the blog. Anything else and I’ll just click to whatever format is best for my geriatric eyeballs.

  21. 5, 20, and 21 work for me both here and in the reader. 14 works here, 15 in the reader… but they are close.

Happy New Year! May this be the one.

  22. 14-19 are best on my laptop here, 17 is best though, followed by 15 and 19.

  23. On the reader 12 and 13 are a little difficult to read. Otherwise they are all ok. I have to say though that I love on your blog when you use the darker blues like 18 and then choice words in red as the red words sort of pop out of the page. Very cool looking.

  24. i’ve never had an issue reading, but then again, i always come directly here. i would suggest bold in a shade of purple or lilac…

  25. I can read all them things, except the 6 and 9. They kind of hurt the eyes.

    Happy New Year, luna!
